Licensed Vehicle Tester at 6 Garden Drive, set up for electric and hybrid vehicles. Full VicRoads roadworthy inspection with high-voltage systems handled safely — certificate issued in one visit where possible.
Roadworthy Inspections for Electric and Hybrid Vehicles in Tullamarine
Electric and hybrid vehicles need a Roadworthy Certificate in Victoria for exactly the same reasons as a petrol car — selling a registered vehicle, re-registering one that's been off the road, or clearing a defect notice. The standard is the same VicRoads Vehicle Standards Information manual, and the inspection has to be done by a Licensed Vehicle Tester. We hold that licence at 6 Garden Dr, and we issue certificates electronically through VicRoads.
What changes is how the car gets inspected. There's no exhaust or emissions component on a battery-electric vehicle, but there is a high-voltage system running under the floor and through the cabin that has to be treated properly — orange HV looms checked for chafing and damage, battery enclosure and mounting points checked for security and impact damage, isolation and warning systems checked for faults, and the whole job done with insulated tooling, PPE and correct shut-down procedure before anything comes apart. Plug-in and conventional hybrids get all of that plus the usual exhaust, emissions and engine-bay items.
The other difference is wear. EVs and hybrids are heavy, and that heat goes into tyres, bushes, shocks and wheel bearings faster than owners expect — so those are the items that most often show up on a rejection sheet. Regenerative braking causes the opposite problem: pads and rotors do so little work that rotors corrode, pit and score from underuse, and a car with 20,000 km on the clock can fail on brakes it has barely used. We see it constantly on Prius, Camry Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid and Corolla Hybrid, and increasingly on Tesla, BYD, MG, Polestar, Hyundai and Kia EVs from Tullamarine, Gladstone Park, Westmeadows, Airport West and across the north-west. Most pass first time. If yours doesn't, you get a written list of what failed, a quote, and repairs and retest done here.
What's Included in Every Car Service
Every EV and hybrid roadworthy at our Tullamarine workshop is a full inspection against VicRoads' Vehicle Standards Information — brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, seatbelts, lights, glass and body — plus the checks a battery-electric or hybrid drivetrain adds: high-voltage cabling, battery mounting, underbody condition, charge port and isolation warning systems.
What We Check on an EV or Hybrid Roadworthy
The full VicRoads roadworthy checklist, plus the high-voltage and underbody items an electric or hybrid drivetrain adds. Inspected by a licensed Victorian Vehicle Tester at our Tullamarine workshop.
HV Battery, Cabling & Mounts
Orange high-voltage looms checked for chafing, heat damage and insecure routing. Battery enclosure, mounting points and underfloor tray inspected for impact damage, deformation and corrosion — a cracked or loose pack is a hard fail.
Charge Port & Warning Systems
Charge port housing, pins, latch and door checked for damage and security. Dash warning and isolation-fault lights verified — an active HV or airbag warning on the cluster will stop a certificate being issued.
Brakes, Rotors & Regen
Pad and rotor thickness measured, rotors checked for the corrosion, pitting and lipping that regen-heavy driving causes, calipers and slide pins checked for binding. Handbrake or electric park brake tested to hold on a hill.
Tyres & Wheels
Tread measured against the 1.5 mm minimum, sidewalls checked for cracks and bulges, wheels for buckles and cracks. EV kerb weight chews through tyres — uneven and shoulder wear are what we find most often.
Steering & Suspension
Ball joints, tie rods, control arm bushes, shocks and wheel bearings checked for play, leaks and wear. Heavier vehicles load these components harder, so anything past spec goes on the rejection sheet.
Lights, Glass, Seatbelts & Body
Headlight aim and output, indicators, brake and reverse lights, seatbelt webbing and retractors, windscreen chips in the driver swept area, structural rust and panel security. Hybrids also get exhaust and emissions checked.
