Yes. We're a Licensed Victorian Vehicle Tester and we inspect and certify battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, conventional hybrid and mild-hybrid vehicles. The certificate is issued electronically through VicRoads — exactly the same certificate as any other car.

The standard is the same VicRoads Vehicle Standards Information manual that applies to every light vehicle. What differs is the content: a battery-electric vehicle has no exhaust or emissions items to check, and instead the high-voltage cabling, battery enclosure and mounting, isolation warning systems and underbody protection are inspected for damage and security. Hybrids get both sets of checks.

Yes. Anything involving the high-voltage side follows correct isolation and shut-down procedure using insulated tooling and rated PPE before work starts. In practice most roadworthy items on an EV don't require de-energising at all — but the ones that do get done properly, which is why plenty of workshops won't take these cars on.

Regenerative braking does most of the slowing, so the friction brakes sit unused. Rotors then corrode, pit and develop a lip, pads glaze or seize in the caliper, and slide pins bind. It's the single most common EV and hybrid roadworthy failure we see, and it happens at low kilometres. It's a straightforward repair — we can quote and do it on-site and retest.

No — battery state of health isn't a roadworthy item. A roadworthy is a pass/fail safety check against legal requirements. If you want the traction battery's capacity and degradation assessed before buying or selling, that's part of our pre-purchase inspection, which we quote separately.

Allow around 90 minutes to 2 hours if it passes first time — slightly longer than a petrol car because of the additional high-voltage and underbody checks. If there are failures we'll come back to you with the list and a quote for repairs.

30 days from the date of issue for sale or registration purposes. If the vehicle fails, you get a written rejection report listing what needs fixing. Have us do the repairs and we'll retest — retests within 14 days are free if no new issues have appeared.
